All-weather riding arena given go-ahead for Stafford

Written by on June 2, 2019

An all weather riding arena has been given the go-ahead by councillors for a field near Eccleshall.

The application, earmarked for land at the back of Church Close, Ranton, was considered by Stafford Borough Council’s Planning Committee , rather than being determined by planning officers, because the applicant is related to a council employee.

Committee members unanimously backed it however at their Wednesday meeting.

Councillor Ann Edgeller said: “The only reason this application is on the agenda is because it is a member of Stafford Borough Council’s relation. Without that I don’t think it would have been here and I recommend approval.”

Councillor Bryan Cross added: “I see nothing wrong with this – it is an established use of a rural environment and there are no objections to it.”

A report to the committee said: “The application proposes the creation of a 42m by 30m arena for riding and training of horses and would be for private rather than any commercial use.

“Equestrian uses and their associated infrastructure are normally considered to be appropriate forms of development, in principle, within the open countryside, subject to other material planning considerations being satisfied.”
