Off-duty policeman hit around the head with a bottle when he apprehended a shoplifter in Sainsbury's

An off-duty police officer was assaulted when he tried to apprehend a shoplifter.

He was attacked when he spotted the suspected thief inside Sainsbury’s in Cannock.

The officer detained the suspect and was hit around the head with a glass bottle.

He was left injured after the incident which happened at the store in the Orbital Retail Park on Saturday morning.

The would-be shoplifter was arrested and the stolen items recovered.

Staffordshire Police Road Policing Unit tweeted a picture of the scene and details of the arrest.

“Never off duty!” they tweeted.

“An off-duty officer has just witnessed a shoplifting in the @cannockpolice area.

 
“The officer has detained the suspect and been subject to a violent attack whereby he was hit around the head with a glass bottle causing injury!

“Suspect arrested and stolen items seized!”
